Tax Day: It’s Not April 15th This Year

April 15th is the date most people commonly associate with Tax Day.  It’s the day your taxes are usually due…  but in 2017 it will be different.  Taxpayers will get three extra days to file.  They will have until Tuesday, April 18, 2017 to file.

Why the Change?

When the filing or payment deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or when a legal holiday is being observed in District of Columbia, in this case Emancipation Day, the IRS moves the tax day and give you additional time to file your taxes.

So this year, Tax Day will be Tuesday, April the 18th.

Here are some other things to remember about filing your taxes this year (for the 2016 tax year)

A major change will affect some early tax filers claiming two key credits.

If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)  or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC for short), the IRS cannot issue your refund before February 15, 2017

check where’s my refund after February 15th for your personalized refund status if you are claiming these credits.

This change gives the IRS more time to detect and prevent identity theft and refund fraud.  It also helps ensure that taxpayers get the refund they are owed.
All taxpayers should still file as usual and submit returns as they normally do.

The IRS issues most refunds within the normal timeframe, 21 days or less after being accepted for processing by the IRS
